Governor Alex Chioma Otti has taken a major step toward advancing Abia State’s economic transformation agenda by approving the immediate commencement of a feasibility study for the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor project.
The approval was granted on Monday, May 5, 2026, during a meeting with a delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited led by Mr. Nicolas Liu. The meeting focused on the strategic infrastructure initiative, which is expected to boost maritime trade, logistics, industrialization, and regional commerce across Abia State and the South-East region.
Governor Otti emphasized that the project must be treated with urgency, directing the company to significantly reduce the proposed feasibility study timeline of six to seven months. According to the governor, the state government is determined to accelerate the planning process in order to unlock the enormous economic potential tied to the project.
He further instructed that immediate consultations and engagements be initiated with relevant federal agencies, particularly the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, to ensure proper alignment with national maritime policies and regulatory requirements.
While expressing optimism about the initiative, Governor Otti stressed the importance of carrying out detailed technical assessments and due diligence. He noted that critical areas such as dredging operations, environmental impact evaluations, navigational access, and long-term commercial viability must be thoroughly examined before full implementation begins.
The proposed Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor project is widely seen as one of the most ambitious economic infrastructure plans currently being pursued by the Abia State Government. Analysts believe the project could position Abia as a major maritime and commercial gateway, opening new opportunities for trade, investment, manufacturing, and job creation.
The inland waterways corridor is also expected to improve connectivity between coastal and inland commercial centers, potentially reducing transportation costs and easing the movement of goods across the region. Economic observers say the project could attract both local and foreign investors seeking access to emerging industrial and logistics hubs in southeastern Nigeria.
The initiative aligns with Governor Otti’s broader vision of economic diversification, infrastructure modernization, and private-sector-driven growth. Since assuming office, the governor has consistently pushed for transformative projects aimed at improving the state’s competitiveness and expanding its economic base beyond traditional revenue sources.
If successfully implemented, the seaport project could significantly reshape Abia’s economic landscape and strengthen its role in Nigeria’s growing marine and blue economy sector.
